Foresters Log #2 – Intertribal Timber Council: Supporting Student Success

Contributed by Nicole Stiffarm, Program Manager SKC TREES Chair, Education Committee, Intertribal Timber Council

Since 1988, the Intertribal Timber Council has awarded 515 scholarships totaling $1,029,500! We are excited to announce the 2021 Truman D. Picard Scholarship is now open and accepting applications. The flyer with all of the application details is available here. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic, there have been slight modifications to the application process. Please read through the flyer in its entirety to ensure all application requirements are met and the application packet is complete. FAQ’s and application assistance are available here.

In addition, The Intertribal Timber Council in partnership with the USDA Forest Service Research and Development are pleased to announce the Native American Natural Resource Research Scholarship. The scholarship is open to graduate students who are planning or currently conducting tribally relevant research in a natural resource issue. Awards under this scholarship vary, not to exceed $5000.00 per award. All application requirements are available here. The deadline for complete applications is December 1, 2020 by 5:00pm PST.

The Indian Forest Management Assessment Team (IFMAT) IV – Call for Student Participants.
Do you want to gain exposure to tribal programs, be involved in a national policy assessment and learn more about how tribes manage their forests? Then consider becoming a Student Participant for the IFMAT report! The National Indian Forest Resource Management Act (NIFRMA) calls for an independent, decadal assessment of the status of tribal forests and forest management, otherwise known as the Indian Forest Management Assessment Team report. IFMAT I, II, III reports can be found online at www.itcnet.org and recruitment for Student Participants (SPs) for the 4th IFMAT report is now underway. Please click here for application details. The deadline for complete applications is December 1, 2020 by 5:00pm PST.

We at the Intertribal Timber Council are extremely proud of the students who we have been able to assist over the years. ITC continually adds to our extended family through offering scholarships that will help the next generation of natural resource professionals. We are able to do so thanks to our partnerships with organizations such as the Bureau of Indian Affairs, US Forest Service, and the Ecological Restoration Institute and more. The upcoming Tribal Forestry Student Summit that will be held in conjunction with ERI is one that we are excited to see happen. Covid-19 has delayed that original timeline, however when it is safe for us to get together I have no doubt that the student summit will be an amazing week.

Please mark your calendars for the 2021 ITC Symposium May 17-20, 2021. In light of the Covid-19 pandemic the symposium will be held in an online format. Please check the ITC website for more information. As we are planning for the transition to an online format, the information will be posted on the website once it is finalized. I would like to close wishing you all the best in health as we move toward a new year. 2020 has been a tough one, please continue to stay safe.

Northern Arizona University sits at the base of the San Francisco Peaks, on homelands sacred to Native Americans throughout the region.
We honor their past, present, and future generations, who have lived here for millennia and will forever call this place home.

NAU is an equal opportunity provider.
ERI's research is funded by many sources, including the USDA Forest Service and the AZ Board of Regents through the Technology, Research and Innovation Fund (TRIF).
