As ERI’s Restoration Ecology and Forest Resilience Program Manager, Anson works to evaluate how restoration and fuel treatments shape the long-term resilience of frequent-fire forests and woodlands in the Intermountain West. He is a quantitative ecologist who pairs field and forest inventory data with remote sensing, spatial analysis, and Bayesian modeling to answer the questions managers actually face: where and how treatments should be done, how they affect forest structure, wildfire outcomes, and other facets of forest ecology, and what those effects mean for planning at landscape scales.
Before joining ERI, Anson was a spatial analyst at the Colorado Forest Restoration Institute, where he helped to develop the Treatment and Wildfire Interagency Geodatabase (TWIG) — the first open-source, open-access, national geodatabase to bring U.S. Forest Service and Department of the Interior fuel treatment records into a single interpretable dataset — and analyzed wildfire–fuel treatment interactions for the ReSHAPE project. His earlier research at the University of Nevada, Reno and Brigham Young University examined how herbivory, pathogens, and disturbance shape forests and agroecosystems. Anson’s current interests include empirical modeling of treatments and wildfire outcomes, disturbance ecology, and building open data and decision-support products that make research usable for the people planning and implementing restoration.
