The smoke billowing from the Flagstaff Ranger District near the Fort Valley Trailhead is from a prescribed burn at the experimental forest on Fort Valley Road. Firefighters will be using drip torches to ignite over 302 acres on their one-day operation 8 miles northwest of Flagstaff. The burn is an operation in partnership with the U.S. Forest Service Rocky Mountain Research Center, Northern Arizona University and the Ecological Research Institute to study the effects of repeated exposure to low-intensity fire on the forest in a controlled location.
