ERI’s newly renamed Tribal Forest Stewardship and Restoration Program continues to reflect our mission to engage with tribes, tribal practitioners, and their partners in landscape-scale ecosystem restoration. The program highlights the vital role of tribes as they assert their sovereign rights to manage forest resources and pursue co-management of adjacent federal lands.
Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center 2025 Navajo Culture Trip
Jon Martin, Tribal Forest Stewardship and Restoration Program director, participated in the Grand Canyon Monitoring and Research Center 2025 Navajo Culture Trip. Jon was invited by Erik Stanfield, an anthropologist with the Navajo Nation Historic Preservation Department, to participate in this Colorado River trip.
The purpose of the trip was to assess the impact of the Glen Canyon Dam Adaptive Management Program on significant tribal archeological resources and other critical resources in the adaptive management plan and to make recommendations for future management. Trip participants were an interdisciplinary team of natural resource specialists from the Navajo Division of Natural Resources, the Grand Canyon National Park, independent Navajo tour operators, and an independent journalist/writer.
